As a wife and working mother of three taking time out for myself would always go on the back burner. Most moms tend to feel guilty when they walk out of the door and leave their family behind. It wasn’t up until recently that I realized being a “good” mom doesn’t mean never leaving my children to do something for myself. It is actually the opposite.
In order for me to be the best mom I can be taking time for myself is necessary. The other part of it was defining what time for myself really meant. It’s not a trip to Wegmans with our kids or working out or running errands. Time for myself is something that allows me to be with just myself and no other”to dos”. It’s going for a pedicure, taking a long walk, meeting friends for lunch, or anything that allows me time for me and only me. Doing this brings me peace of mind and a sense of calmness.
That is what allows patience and focus on my children and family when I am with them. Without time for myself, I get resentful and frustrated. It’s a snowball effect that eventually makes me feel like a crazy person who has no time to get anything done and prohibits me to enjoy any task.
So my advice to all moms (and dads) is to try and give yourself a daily time to just focus on yourself and do something you enjoy. Although daily isn’t always possible, schedule something weekly. This gives you something to look forward to. And those moments with your family become that much more meaningful and enjoyable.
